Yoga for Upper Back Pain

The above video shows the following yoga poses for alleviating upper back pain.

  1. Sukhasana (Sanskrit: Sukha means pleasure) or the Easy pose
  2. Marjaryasana-Bitilasana (Sanskrit: Marjari means cat and Bitila means cow) or the Seated cat cow pose
  3. Dwikonasan (Sanskrit: Dwikona means double angle) is a variation of double angle pose, seated shoulder stretch, hand behind the back, followed by Balasana (Sanskrit: Bala meas child) or the Child pose
  4. Urdhva Mukha Pasasana (Sanskrit: Urdhva means upwards, Mukha face; and Shvana means dog) or the Thread the Needle pose with a slight variation. Another name of this pose is Parsva Balasana (Sanskrit: Parsva means revolved and Bala meaning child) 
  5. Bhujangasana (Sanskrit: Bhujang means cobra) or the Cobra pose ending the Balasana or the Child pose 

The 17th-century classic text on yoga, Gheranda Samhita, describes Bhujangasana or the Cobra pose, instrumental to keeping the back healthy. The Cobra pose is also a part of the set of yoga postures in Surya Namaskaar for having an agile and robust back. Besides, Bhujangasana also helps keep a healthy liver, kidney, and digestive functions.
