Yoga for Plantar Fasciitis

The above video shows the following sequence of yoga poses that effectively minimize foot pain due to Plantar Fasciitis.

  1. Vajrasana (Sanskrit: Vajra means weapon) or the Thunderbolt pose
  2. Virasana (Sanskrit: Vira means hero) or the Hero pose
  3. Adho Mukha Shvanasana (Sanskrit: Adho means down, Mukha means face, Shvana means dog) or the Downward Facing Dog pose
  4. Virabhadrasana (Sanskrit: Vira meaning hero, Bhadra meaning friend) or the Warrior pose
  5. Eka Pada Rajakapotasana (Sanskrit: Eka meaning one, Pada meaning foot or leg, Raja meaning king, Kapota meaning pigeon) or the Pigeon pose

Virabhadrasana is the key yoga pose in treating Plantar Fasciitis. This pose was introduced in the tradition of Hatha Yoga in the 20th century, while the name Virabhadrasana is derived from a strong and highly fearsome form of God Shiva. Virabhadra was born out of the wrath of God Shiva, who pulled out a lock of his hair from where the mighty warrior, Virabhadra, arose. In the Yogic tradition, Lord Shiva is considered as the Adi Yogi (Sanskrit: Adi means initial or first), the father and founder of Yoga.
