Yoga for Heart Problems
In the above video, yoga expert Archana Amlapure, founder of Ojas and Yoga Wellness, Singapore shows the following yoga poses for heart problems.
- Parvatasana (Sanskrit: Parvat means mountain) or the Mountain pose
- Marjariasana (Sanskrit: Marjari means cat) or the Cat and Cow Pose
- Vajarasan (Sanskrit: Vajra means weapon) or the Thunderbolt pose with the hand behind and chest pushing forward. It helps to open up the lungs
- Trikonasana (Sanskrit: Trikona means three angles) or the Triangle pose
- Gomukhasana (Sanskrit: Go means cow and Mukha means face) or the Cow Face pose. Watch the video to see five more poses in the sequence like Bhujangasana (Sanskrit: Bhujang or means snake) and Setu Bandhasana (Sanskrit: Setu means bridge and Bandha means locked)
Setu Bandhasana, popularly known as the Bridge pose, finds its first appearance in 19th-century yoga text Sritattvanidhi written by Krishnaraja Wodeyar (1794 – 1868) was also the king of Mysore, a city in the Southern part of India. Setu Bandhasana is a yoga pose related to the epic Ramayana when Lord Ram takes help from Hanuman and other monkeys. The monkeys build a bridge of stones to cross the sea to reach Lanka to kill the demon Ravana in the southernmost tip of India. BKS Iyengar’s Light on Yoga (1966) refers to Setu Bandhasana pose as Setu Bandha Sarvangasana or Uttana Mayurasana (Sanskrit: Uttan means intense stretch and Mayura means peacock).
