Yoga for Lower Back Pain

The above video explains the following yoga poses to reduce lower back problems.

  1. Apanasana pose (Sanskrit: Apana means downward moving force) or Knees to Chest pose or the Wind-Relieving pose while focusing on the breath.
  2. Matsyasana (Sanskrit: Matsya means fish) or the Fish pose with arms stretched over the head similar to Setu Bandhasana (Sanskrit: Setu means bridge) or the Bridge pose
  3. Ashwa Sanchalanasana (Sanskrit: Ashwa meaning horse) or the Low Lunge pose with a lifted chest
  4. Padhahasthasana (Sanskrit: Padha means foot and Hasth means hand) or Forward Fold pose
  5. Shava Udarakarshanasana (Sanskrit: Shava means corpse, Udara means abdomen, Akarsa means to stretch) or the Abdominal Twist yoga posture or the Universal Spinal Twist pose, ending with Balasana (Sanskrit: Bala means child) or the Child pose

Shava Udarakarshanasana, is the key yoga pose for lower back pain, which helps remove tightness in the lower back, aligns the hip joint. It also goes by other names as Supta Matsyendrasana (Sanskrit: Supta means sleeping, Matsya means fish) Jathara Parivartanasana (Sanskrit: Jathara means belly, and Parivartan means to turn around, to change). The first reference to the Shava Udarakarshanasana pose comes in the classical yoga text, Light on Yoga (1966) written by BKS Iyengar.
